My Virtual Romance
When I was in Korea, I crafted numerous kinetic dolls and created a fantastical world using objects and materials sourced from nature.
Within the frame we call 'life,' we often experience vicarious satisfaction by substituting ourselves in the real world with imaginary characters in a virtual one. Although the characters inhabiting these fantasy realms may visually differ from us, they are reflections of our inner selves. In these imagined worlds, we can become brave warriors, divine beings, or royalty. Through my dolls and paintings, I give form to these imaginary characters. The dolls, like avatars, symbolize the various facets of our identities—effigies that represent us indirectly. While the dolls from my earlier series were human in form, they were kinetic sculptures whose necks, waists, and faces rotated and moved, embodying gestures and expressions. I intentionally revealed the fabricated nature of these dolls through visible knit lines and their exaggerated, bizarre expressions.
Rather than simply presenting individual artworks in a static, empty space, my primary goal has always been to create a world within my art—a world that the audience can enter, where they can immerse themselves in its fantasies. My exhibitions have been staged in a variety of venues, from traditional white booths in exhibition halls to more unconventional settings like restaurants, cafes, and even hotel guest rooms and restrooms. The purpose of these exhibitions is to provide visitors with a sensation of suspended reality during their stay, inviting them into an imaginary space, a fantasy world. This approach challenges both the audience and myself as an artist to continually discover and engage with new worlds.
